Basic Philosophy
Students should spend the majority of the time reading books at their instructional (just right) level.

Writing & Word Study
Third graders will be taught Language Arts and Writing through several means:

FUNdations explicit daily multi-modal phonics instruction
Writer’s Workshop
• Writer’s Notebook
• Personal Narratives
• Open Response
• Nonfiction
• Poetry

Throughout the year, all students will practice the 5 step writing process:

• Pre-Write
• Write (First Draft)
• Revise
• Edit (Self and Peer)
• Publish (Final Draft)


Third graders are expected to print neatly, and will learn cursive through the Handwriting Without Tears program

Math Curriculum
Our balanced math program includes:

• Collaborative learning
• Integration of literature
• Hands-on activities
• Math journal writing

 Some of the units being covered this year are:
• data collecting and graphing
• review of money and clocks
• multiplication
• division
• geometry
• fractions
• adding and subtracting decimals
and much, much more!

More About Math Journals:
Throughout the year the students will be taught Problem Solving Strategies to help them solve complex math problems. The students will demonstrate understanding of different word problems by answering each problem in a journal format.

Social Studies & Science Curriculum
Units covered in Social Studies are:
• Needham Community and Boston
• Regions in the United States, States and Capitals

Units covered in Science are:
• Fossils
• Electricity
